This e-mail came from a student of the Waverly Central Marching Band. It shows one of the true spirits of Marching band.

Heylo (hey+hello = heylo) Dekalb County Marching Tigers,
I too am a tiger.  If I am not mistaken, you and I will be competing this weekend in Hickman County in the same division.  I just wanted to let you know how much of a well-respected band you are & do wish you the best amount of luck.  I remember last year at State when you guys missed finals by 3.8 points... the same happened to us.  Our chances were blown by 2.4. points, and I am sure you were following right behind us.  May you and us be in the top ten this year!  Either way,  I will support Dekalb even though I am not a member of your group. So break a leg. ; )
I have heard that you have done well this year and my faith tells me that your season will continue to flourish.  As a senior, I know how much hard work is put into the band program, and as a section leader, I add more effort into it every day.  Music is my unconditional passion... and I know it is the same for all of you.  What you do out on that field, believe it or not, is always remembered.  It changes communities ---> I believe this because it did here.  There is so much pride in doing it and I hope that you will never forget the rewards that come along beyond the trophies... please hold that in your heart.  If you do, no obstacle can stop you from achieving.
The greatest thing I have ever learned was a quote my band director says to us: "It is not whether you win or lose, but how you define winning."  From a tiger to a tiger, I realize that you are already champions in my book.  Always make the show better and keep in mind that the best band is the best all of the time. Again, good luck my friends.  I shall see you soon.

So this story continues, I emailed Stef and asked if I could put that email on our website.  My email read like this:

Stef,
WOW, your email spoke volumes to me about your character. Thank you very much for the encouraging words. I have fwd-ed this to the director to make sure the band hears it.

I too marched...many many years ago and I credit band for helping shape me into who I am. My "line" is that "band made me a better me than it did musician". Band so shapes people with many many life lessons whether they have anything to do with music or not.

I wanted to know if you were ok with me putting this letter on our website. I'll take you're email address off if that will make you more comfortable. I just want to make sure I show the world (at least the world that looks at OUR website) how it is to be supportive of each other. Again...thank you for the kind, supportive words...and BREAK A LEG to you and the Waverly Band as well.

It is perfectly fine that you put my email on your website, and the decision to remain my address anonymous does not matter.  I will personally feel comfortable either way, so I'll leave it up to you.  Although, if you do happen to include it, it might give me an opportunity to meet some of the members.

No other band, to me, in competition is an enemy, especially if the group is well-rounded and has my deepest respect.  I want them to be just as successful as my band here in Waverly... simply because... it changes communities & the people in it.  What a goal it would be for every town to experience such a gift!

And I agree with you by the fact that the program shapes the every individuals who participate.  There is no way I could have become the person I am today without my favorite pasttime over the last seven years.  I must confess that as my last year is winding down and prepare for college, it is getting more difficult to let all of it go, yet I have faith that the rest of them will be taken care of.  Tigers work best in a pride.

You are greatly welcomed for the encouragement. I look forward to seeing Dekalb at State.  As always, we'll break each other's legs. ; )
